Zyprexa Lawsuits - Diabetes, Ketoacidosis, and Death
The use Zyprexa has been linked to diabetes and serious diabetes-related conditions including hyperglycemia, ketoacidosis, insulin deficiency, diabetic coma (caused by severe insulin deficiency), and death.
Zyprexa (olanzapine) is used to treat mental conditions including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Since being approved by the FDA in 1996, Zyprexa has been prescribed to almost 20 million people in 84 countries. Zyprexa is manufactured and distributed by Eli Lilly, for whom Zyprexa sales generate more than $4 billion a year, about 40% of its total annual earnings.
In the November 2001, researchers at Duke University and the FDA reported findings of elevated blood sugar levels in patients using Zyprexa. These increases ranged from mild elevations in blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and the onset of diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis. Zyprexa-induced Ketoacidosis has caused the death of about half of the cases reported.
